In May, Unity at the Movies (located at 39th & Hilyard) will show two
movies, and while both of them are wonderful accomplishments, both of
them come with warnings.
On Thursday, May 14, 2009  at 7:00 p.m..

"Milk"

Sean Penn in his 2008 Oscar-winning role as Harvey Milk, the first
homosexual politician to achieve national impact.
The warning is a short one: if you are at all homophobic, this will make
you uneasy.  Get over it or stay home.
The Friday warning is more complex.  It's a "difficult" film, but a
special opportunity.

On Friday, May 15, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.

"Synecdoche, New York"

with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Samantha Morton, Michelle Williams,
Catherine Keener, Emily Watson, Dianne Wiest, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Hope Davis.
The warning is this:  Often when we see something in a movie that
doesn't somehow "fit" into the pattern of our experience, we tend to
avoid it, stuff it into the dark recesses of our minds, to not
acknowledge that we've seen it at all, and then it festers in our
subconscious.  If you watch "Synecdoche" without some sort of
preparation for what you're seeing, you'll wind up with a festering mass
of questions.  In fact, certain critics have said that you shouldn't see
it at all ... unless you've seen it once already.
For the serious film-goer, I have included two reviews from reliable
sources, first,  a four-star rating from Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times:
